prof.dr. Wim de Vries

Wim de Vries, professor at the Environmental Systems Analysis Group of Wageningen University, chair at “Integrated nutrient impact assessment.

Background: I studied soil physics and soil chemistry and became a researcher in the field of biogeochemistry with special reference to nutrient cycling, soil acidification and greenhouse gas emissions. I became fascinated about the large scale impacts of the elevated use of nutrients (especially nitrogen and phosphorus) in agriculture on air-, soil – and water quality and related boundaries in view of those impacts. I was coordinator of the International Co-operative Programme on Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Forests (ICP Forests) level II Intensive monitoring, comprising over 500 plots  in selected forest ecosystems in Europe, with the aim to clarify impacts of air pollution and climate change on forest ecosystems. This project. Since 2018, I collaborated with professor  Frank Sterck on the large-scale forest experiment where I contribute to the research related to nutrient cycling, including the assessment of inputs by deposition and weathering and the outputs by forest harvesting and leaching.
